An SP30 is given when exceeding the speed limit on a public road. A public road is typically a non-motorway, where as a SP50 is given when your exceeding the speed limit on the motorway.
An on the spot fine of £60 and 3 points can be issued by a police officer if you exceed the speed limit, and likewise, by post, if your caught by a speed camera. However, this is minimum amount of fine. The maximum amount that can be given depends on how much you are exceeding the speed limit by.
Harsher fines are given out if you are issued with a Court Summons, and are usually handed out when you exceed the speed limit by a greater amount. For example if you are travelling at 50 Mph in a 30 Mph zone, then that could lead to a court summons. In court you it is possible to be allocated up to 6 points. In addition you could be fined up to £1000 pounds.
Therefore, it is always best, if you are indeed guilty, to accept the fixed penalty, as the outcome of the court proceeding could lead to a heftier fine and more points endorsed on your licence.
How long does a SP30 remain on the licence?
The SP30 is valid for 3 years. However, it cannot be removed for 4 years. You can contact the DVLA to remove the endorsements, but you will have to pay for the changes to your licence.
Note that most insurance companies will ask for any convictions in the last 5 years, irrespective on whether the endorsements are actually present on your licence. It is not worth lying about the offences, because you could potentially make your insurance policy void, or only covered for 3rd party.
